There are a few categories under which you might qualify for residence in
New Zealand.

Skilled Migrant Category

This category was implemented on 17 December 2003, replacing the old General Skills Category.  This category works on a points system.  Points are awarded for

  • age
  • qualifications
  • work experience
  • an offer of employment from a New Zealand company

Bonus points are also awarded for other factors, such as:

  • an offer of employment outside Auckland
  • qualifications, work experience and an offer of employment in certain areas of skills shortages and future growth areas
  • qualifications and a skilled offer of employment for the spouse of the principal applicant

The process is a two-tier system:

  • You are not allowed to apply for permanent residence without invitation.  This means that you first submit an “Expression of Interest” to apply for residence in New Zealand.  You will then be evaluated based on the points system. The highest points earners will be invited to apply for permanent residence.

  • Once you are invited to apply for permanent residence, your residence application might lead to approval in two ways, either directly by receiving residence as soon as you meet the requirements, or else indirectly through a two year “work-to-residence” program.

Family Category

This category is meant to allow the spouses, parents, siblings, dependent children, or single adult children of
New Zealand residents or citizens to join them on a permanent basis in New Zealand.

Parents, for example, could qualify for residence in New Zealand if they have an equal number of children or more living permanently in New Zealand than in any other country.

Family Quota Category

This category allows New Zealand citizens or residents to sponsor overseas family members for residence in New Zealand in cases where they do not qualify for residence in any other category.

A limited number of people per year will be allowed to apply in this category.

Long Term Business Visa Category

The Long Term Business Visa category is for people who wish to establish a business in New Zealand. Successful applicants are granted a work visa for up to three years, and may later apply for residence under the Entrepreneur category.

This category requires you to have an idea for establishing a business in New Zealand and access to sufficient funds (personally or via pre-approved finance) to set it up. The application can be for:

  • The establishment of a new business
  • Purchase of an existing business
  • Purchase of a New Zealand franchise opportunity

You will also need a business plan that is realistic and demonstrates an understanding of the New Zealand business environment, and you will need to have business experience relevant to the type of business that you want to establish in New Zealand.

To apply under this category you must not have been involved in a business failure or bankruptcy in the past five years, nor have ever been convicted of fraud or professional misconduct. You must also satisfy health requirements and in addition to investment capital, sufficient funds for maintenance and accommodation.

If you have qualifications that are essential to the business you want to establish, they should be recognized in New Zealand, as some professions require compulsory registration with the appropriate professional body in New Zealand.

Newcor Immigration Services utilise the services of a reputable Business Consultant in Auckland to prepare a Business Plan to the requirements and satisfaction of the Immigration Authorities in New Zealand.

The business proposal plan covers the following:

  • an outline of the proposed business and of its viability including the market size, competitor analysis, marketing strategy, SWOT analysis etc
  • financial information (profit and loss, cash flow, balance sheet and financial ratios projections)
  • the business experience of the applicant
  • knowledge of the New Zealand market

Investor Category

Migrants in this category are selected according to their business experience and the amount of money that they can invest in New Zealand. In order to qualify, applicants must invest a minimum of NZ$1 000 000 in New Zealand. A points system is used to evaluate applications on the criteria of age, business experience and funds.  Scoring fewer points for age and experience, will mean that you need a bigger investment in order to earn enough points.
